CHAPTER FIVE

*Caw!*

As soon as he entered the forest, a murder of crows took flight, followed by every small creature in the area running away as quickly as they could. Jaxon had seen videos of forest fires before—where all of the animals worked in tandem to try and escape—but he couldn't smell any smoke. “What a strange phenomenon! Hope everyone is okay out there!”

He had come here with a plan in mind already, and the tools to enact it. One of the benefits of having a party member that was a brewer of poisons, was that he could get them fairly cheaply compared to buying them on the open market. He spent the next few days going around the area, marking each of the water holes within a half day's travel. Jaxon learned an interesting fact about this area, it seemed that there was one central pool, and each of the others connected to it eventually.

“Well, that will work out for me just fine!” It was time to put the plan in place. Going to each of the other watering holes, he tossed in a large packet of slow-release poison. It wasn't anything that would kill most creatures, only something that gave the water a strong taste of being foul. In fact, the water itself was completely safe to drink; but any animal sensitive to taste would immediately attempt to seek out something else.

Jaxon would be waiting for them.

He hurried to the central water area, and even though he heard a ruckus, most of the animals did not flee as they had when he had first joined them in the forest. Perhaps a dangerous monster had run through just before he had gotten here? “Jaxon's Little Shop of Chiropractic Services Is open for business! We are accepting all new clients!”

Practically as soon as he had started speaking, a small chipmunk came toward the watering hole. It appeared very nervous to be around him, but its thirst was outweighing its fear. “Our first guest of honor!”

Jaxon sprinted over and left his hand to shoot out at the tiny creature. It squeaked and tried to run, but his hand closed around it as effectively as any live trap. “Well, good morning! I have been looking for volunteers, and even though you are someone smaller than my normal clientele, I am happy to attempt my adjustment!”

*Crack!*

The Chiropractor stared at the limp corpse in his hands, coughed awkwardly, and tossed it to the side. “Goodness me, how lucky can one man get by from not having regulatory oversight? That would have probably cost me my license, and brought animal activists down on me back on Earth… not an issue here!”

His hand shot out, catching a bird in mid-flight without looking. In fact, when he glanced over at it, his expression was almost one of surprise. “Why, thank you! I had no idea you would be practically jumping in to help me train! I’m touched.”

*Crack!*

“Please accept my deepest apologies for that… and my deepest gratitude for
